What is Rape?

Rape is when a person has sexual intercourse with another person without the victim's consent.

Rape Myths

  • Once a man is turned on he looses control
  • Rape, by definition, means the victim must have attempted to fight back
  • If she drinks what does she expect to happen
  • A woman cannot be raped by her husband
  • Sexual offenders have no prior relationships with their victim

Rape Facts

  • A man or woman can control their sexual desires at any time
  • A rape victim does not always have to put up a fight: if the victim says no or if actions show there was no consent then IT IS RAPE
  • The consumption of alcohol may increase your chances of being raped or sexually assaulted, but a person should be able to have a drink of alcohol without worrying about being raped
  • 14% of women who had ever been married were the victims of at least one completed or attempted rape by their husbands or ex-husbands. Sex is not a marital duty and if it is not consensual then it is rape
  • 77% of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows

Red Flags

  • He/She demeans and puts down the opposite sex
  • He/She ignores your opinions and/or needs
  • He/She intimidates you physically
  • He/She has a domineering/controlling personality
  • He/She is cruel to children and/or animals
  • He/She uses alcohol and/or drugs and pressures you to do the same
  • He/She tries repeatedly to get you alone
